She made her debut in the pages of “Future’s Guardian” as a brooding vigilante; hesitant to join a team, but eager to hunt down criminals.  The sound of her vehicle, The Mammoth, is enough to send fear into hardened gang members.  Her weapons, lethal, but only if she so chooses.

She is the hooded hunter known as Red Sinner.

But who is she?  And why is she called that?

Her past will be revealed in the pages of “Battlerock Comics Presents” #2, and, according to writer/creator/publisher David 2, she is certainly no crusading knight.

“Red Sinner is a woman with a singular purpose,” he said.  “She’s trying to find someone very dangerous, and she realizes that, in order to find him, she has to make sure he has no place he can hide, because he’s someone who has eluded justice for so long and gotten away with it through the help of the criminal underworld.”

Clues about who Red Sinner is have been hinted at through her debut in “Future’s Guardian” #16, including references to a character named Ravenclaw and his connection to a retired FBI agent who now runs Millennium City’s hometown insurance company.

“Ravenclaw is one of those characters you don’t really hear about,” David 2 explains.  “He’s not someone looking for glory.  He’s not trying to create a legend.  He stays in the shadows, and he does so for a reason.  And it’s because of who he is and what he does that his paths cross with the woman that eventually becomes what he hoped would be his protegee.”

Red Sinner’s story also takes a hint from the “vengeful women” B-movie genre going back to the 1970’s.

David 2 explains.  “We’ve all heard of the guy who was once the victim who then becomes a vigilante-hero.  DC has Batman and Vigilante and Green Arrow.  Marvel has Punisher and Moon Knight and Daredevil.  But until those B-movies started coming about, you really didn’t hear about the women who were done wrong and became vigilantes.  Women were seen as either virtuous or else they are perpetual victims, waiting for the male hero to save them.  Or else they were femme fatale villains, manipulating others into doing the deed for them.  And then, in the 70’s, you had female characters that didn’t wait for men to save them.  They were done wrong and they took matters into their own hands.”

David 2 also credits recent movies like ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Peppermint’ as inspirations for the character.

“Red Sinner’s origins are connected to a secret from her past.  A secret that would haunt her in ways she never imagined.  Now that secret is a permanent part of her new life.”

Red Sinner also has a connection to a certain character in other Battlerock Comics based in the now-defunct City of Heroes MMO.

“Readers of the old ‘Furia and the Guardians’ series and the currently-paused ‘Task Force Twilight’ series will see a certain name come up in this issue that they will recognize,” said David 2.  “Red Sinner wouldn’t be the first hero in Champions Online to have a counterpart in the City of Heroes, and that will be something explored in the future, but, in her instance, you’ll find a lot more differences than similarities, and I don’t mean in terms of outfits.”
