BATTLEROCK COMICS TO LAUNCH NEW INFREQUENT SERIES IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN
GEORGIA – (10/29/2019) – Battlerock Comics will be launching a new “infrequent” comic series called “Battlerock Comics Presents” on October 30th, just in time for Halloween.
According to writer/creator/editor David 2, the decision to launch a new series came in part because of the Halloween season.
“Every year, the MMO services have their Halloween themed events,” he said. “When you’re working with the digital world of Champion Online, that means a month of perpetual night with a red haze over everything. So, unless you are working on something that is either all-indoors or something that requires nighttime scenes, you’re waiting a month before there’s daytime. So, I figured, why not work with it?”
The debut issue of “Battlerock Comics Presents” focuses on a new character for readers, a supernatural being called “Penitence”.
David 2 describes the character as someone compelled to fight evil as a way to earn redemption to atone for their past actions.
“This is a person who was vindictive and somewhat amoral in life. We all encounter someone like this person today. Mean-spirited online trolls and toxic co-workers, schoolyard bullies and their grown-up counterparts, and public personalities that take great pleasure tearing down people and making their lives miserable. People who seem to have no scruples and no restraint in getting what they want. Well, what happens when someone like that dies and has to answer to all that in the hereafter?”
In addition to a story of attempted redemption, the story of Penitence also involves a mystery that takes place during the Blood Moon; the month-long haunting of the world of Champions Online.
“The story focuses on a woman being stalked by someone who isn’t alive,” said David 2, “who shows up during the time of the Blood Moon, when there are zombies everywhere. Who is he and why is he here? Why is he fixated on her?”
David 2 says that working on this specific issue was a challenge for him as a comic creator.
“Normally when I come up with a comic, there’s a lot of planning and organization, hashing out stories and designing the look and feel of the comic. This time, I had less than a month to go from idea to publishing in order to keep it in the spirit of the Halloween season. And this is on top of the other obligations outside of Battlerock Comics. It’s been a long time since I was doing something like this on the spur-of-the-moment, so I’m glad I’m still able to pull it off now.”
“Battlerock Comics Presents” is considered an “infrequent” series, which means new issues will be published when time allows. David 2 also clarifies that the series would not be a replacement for the current ongoing series set in the same MMO, specifically “Future’s Guardian”.
“This series will help tell the stories that I can’t really tell in ‘Future’s Guardian’. As an MMO player, I am inspired to come up with all sorts of new and different characters. Sometimes they can fit in my comics, and sometimes they just can’t. This new infrequent series will allow me to tell their stories when possible.”
This would be the second time that David 2 came up with an infrequent comic series for just such a reason. In 2010, he launched “Tales from Paragon City”, which focused on several characters in the now-defunct City of Heroes MMORPG. This series ran alongside his regular series “Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight”.
“Battlerock Comics Presents” #1 featuring Penitence will be online on October 30th, the day before Halloween, and has the comic rating “T for Teens”.
