He’s a man of mystery that has the Paragon City police nervous.
But who is Sundown?
According to creator David 2, Sundown has a connection to the original investigation of the corrupt Blue Dog Squad.
“Most people know that the original Blue Dogs were taken down by the efforts of Jimmy Hellfighter and the Libertarian Avenger,” said David 2. “But they weren’t the only ones that were involved.”
Indeed, in the classic one-shot “Guardians of the Dawn 2012 Special”, we learn that both future Guardians were going after the original Blue Dogs their own ways.
“We saw how the Libertarian Avenger handled things,” David 2 says. “He preferred to work alone. But we never saw how someone like Jimmy Hellfighter, a former cop himself, handled the investigation. As with any good investigator, he had leads and sources that he followed. And that’s where Sundown comes in.”
David 2 also said that the character the name Sundown was inspired by the Gordon Lightfoot folk song with the same name.
“The song was a warning about someone fooling around with a man’s wife. I kept on hearing it on the radio when I was a child, but it was only when I heard it as an adult did I fully understand the lyrics. And I thought that would make for an interesting name for a dark and mysterious hero. Someone on the edge, who was betrayed, and a warning not to cross this person.”
You can find out more about who – and what – Sundown is when “Task Force Twilight” #4 goes online on June 29th.
