For the past few years that the Guardians of the Dawn have operated in Paragon City since their “resurrection”, they’ve enjoyed the support of a special “Girl Friday” by the name of Mindy Harrison. She’s the one that has kept the operations office moving through the transitions from Icon Powers to the temporarily-re-activated Libertarian Avenger and then to Ryder Lightning, the group’s current operations manager. She helped with the expansion not only in the ranks of the team but also in the expansion of the base itself.
But very little is known about Mindy, other than she was brought over by the group’s patron: Wentworth’s Fine Consignment CEO Andrew Wentworth.
And now, with the presence of Vanguard special investigator Carlton Sage taking a close look into the group’s activities, Mindy is nowhere to be seen. Why? What connection is there between the two of them?
Well, that connection will be revealed in a two-part storyline in “Furia and the Guardians” starting in March.
Writer and creator David 2 says that the character of Mindy was inspired by several figures in comic book history.
“Right off the bat some people will see similarities to Wendy from the 1970’s ‘Super-Friends’ cartoon, and that’s intentional. Wendy seemed to be the one character that was underrated even more than Aquaman simply because she was one-third of the whole ‘Junior Super-Friends’ comedy shtick. She was the brains of the trio, Marvin was the fanboy-idiot, and Wonder Dog was… well, your stereotypical Hanna-Barbera cheap comedic animal sidekick with a cape.”
He does point out, though, that “in all fairness she wasn’t the only female sidekick of the time. DC Comics also had Jean Loring, who was Ray Palmer’s super-smart girlfriend-slash-wife in ‘The Atom’, and Elongated Man’s wife Sue Dibny also wasn’t just a convenient damsel-in-distress. Sue was also an eager partner in her husband’s investigations as well as helping out the Justice League in several of their incarnations.”
“So really,” David 2 says, “Mindy is an amalgamation of those three characters.”
But if Mindy is connected to “Wendy” in the “Super-Friends” series, does that mean there is also a “Marvin”?
“Check out Issue 12,” he said, “and you’ll have your answer.”
Part 1 of “Mindy’s Story” will be told when “Furia and the Guardians” Issue 22 goes online on March 31st.
