Once again it’s time in the world of Champions Online that the people of Millennium City honor and celebrate their greatest supervillain ever!
Wait… what?
Yes, despite that he calls himself “the greatest supervillain EVER”, people do somehow love and appreciate Foxbat!
It’s not that he’s some kind of rogue anti-hero. Far from it. He engages in criminal capers. He robs, he cheats, he steals, and, yes, some of his antics have caused harm. He does have an army of loyal fans and robot minions that record all of their escapades and post them on social media.
So what is it about him that makes people want to celebrate him and have a whole convention devoted to him?
Marketing.
Foxbat managed to create an image around himself that could be marketed and sold as a TV series and movie series and even comic books. Yes, he has corny devices like ping-pong guns and oversized bubblegum traps and and slaps people around with foam fingers and trout, but he isn’t a mass-murderer like Doctor Destroyer or Mechanon. Yes, he tries to take over the local TV studio every other Tuesday, but he doesn’t threaten the lives of any of the personalities or try to take over the city with mass-hypnosis or some tech-based virus. Rather, he wants WCOC to air repeats of the old “Foxbat” TV show that somehow existed prior to him being born.
He’s a comical villain. Some would even say he’s a Saturday Morning cartoon villain. And in a world where the undead come back every Halloween and where corporate power executives and megalomaniacal super-robots and alien conquerors conspire to take over the planet and threaten global extinction, it’s rather refreshing to have a villain that’s not really evil, but just is one who chooses to call himself a villain. Even if it’s “the greatest supervillain ever! EVER!“
That said… who is this guy?
He certainly keeps himself busy. But he doesn’t look like the real Foxbat, does he?
Keep an eye on the pages of “Future’s Guardian” to find out who this guy really is.
Meanwhile, if you happen to visit Millennium City, Michigan (formerly Detroit), during this week and next, be sure to stop by the Renaissance Center and check out FoxbatCon! You’ll see old stars of stage and screen, devoted collectors, cosplay performers, and, yes, you’ll most likely catch the mayor and a few superheroes.
